The large building at the head of Donner Pass started out as a dormitory built in 1931 for highway workers. It then became the Donner Spitz Inn, and then the Alpine Skills Institute, and today is Sugar Bowl Institute. The unique-looking octagonal garage was collapsed by snow in 1983.
